rattling antlers

realized i lost my rattle bag so went to tsc and canadian tire. both out of rattle bags.
picked up a pair of those fake rattle antlers. apparently they are supposed to sound more like the real mcoy. i rattled in a buck with the bag so im pretty sure they should work, but wondering if anyone else uses them. primos is the brand.

They do work. Rattled in a few bucks with them. Mostly young bucks. On three different occasions, the bucks showed up in bow range before I finished the first rattling sequence. Haven't had a huge buck come in with them like I have had with real antlers.

Maybe the human ear isn't as good as a deers, but I have a real pair and the bag rattle and honestly couldn't tell the difference in sound. I like using the bag because it reduces movement in the stand. But not an issue in a pop-up.

I plan on trying them again this fall in a new stand out back. It's a big area and not sure if scent wicks will reach far enough out to catch a nose, may need to use sound to bring them in.

It sure is hard to find good stores for hunting stuff anymore, it's forcing us to shop online more. But I have 'Prime' free shipping so for $20 I can have them at my door in a few days..

I use real antlers, mostly because I hit brush and stir leaves up while grunt tube is in my mouth. Smashed my fingers a few times but have rattled in a few decent bucks, never shot one though, They always come in on high alert.

Agree rattle bag does sound the same to me.

Years ago, I purchased some fake antlers from Cabelas. I didn’t like the sound from them so didn’t use them after the first season.

I have 2 sets of real antlers that I use: small 8 point and large 10 point. Lol regardless of whatever set that I’ve used I’ve never had any luck drawing deer in. I dunno, maybe I scared them. In any case, I hardly carry them, unless I’m sitting in a tree stand. I don’t carry them while still hunting as they are too bulky. Maybe I’ll look into the rattle bags.

ive read it also depends on what stage of the rut the deer are in at the time.
i know theres a stage where they just spar . but after that stage ends and they are chasing does i dont think they care much for a fight and will go look for a doe in heat instead.

i pulled my camera this past weekend and have 2 smaller guys who seem to be around each other all the time.

1 of the videos they start to smell eachothers faces (similar like how a dog would sniff another dog for the first time) then 1 puts his head down and starts slow walking towards the other guy. other guy locked his antlers with him and they went at it for a couple minutes. they are only small 4 points too

i also wonder if it has to do with how hard you rattle or for how long.

as you said maybe it spooks the smaller deer cause they dont want any part in a big fight going on.

as for the rattle bags, i enjoy using it, some may not know, but you can remove some of the sticks in them to create almost a different tune it will give off or how it goes off.

I've had good responses over the years to light rattling for the prerut. Almost any deer will walk over to see what's up. Only once did I have a mature buck show up and absolutley rake the brush in front of me out about 60 yards. He wouldn't come any closer but he sure was fired up. I couldn't have shot him anyway ......I was shaking like a high school kid in his first parked car. Lol.

I used to use a set of antlers cut off of a buck I harvested but they are a PITA to carry in and out of the stand. I switched over to a rattle bag and I really like them. I have two rattle bags......one is a Quaker Boy and the other is the MAD. I Prefer the Quaker Boy because of the large elastic sewn into the bag to keep it quiet on the walk in.
