Having a good year - 2021 Recurve Buck
Going into this fall season I decided that if I got a quality, up close, perfect opportunity on any "handsome" buck, I wouldn't pass it up. And when I say quality, I mean a calm animal, close range, broadside. There's a big disadvantage in shooting less than 150fps that i dont think is emphasized enough. An alert deer is a no-go.
So this weekend, on my 9th outing of the season, there's a NE wind that gives me the opportunity to hunt a pre-hung stand on a field edge. I dont like hunting field edges, but this corner, where a fence row meets a 20acre block of hardwoods produces CLOSE encounters year after year. When I invite a friend or a new hunter out, and the wind works, it's the spot I always put them. And there's always a story to tell afterwards.
An hour into my sit, a buck appears several hundred yards ahead in the beans. He looks "handsome" thru my binos. I dismiss it as just another deer that I get to watch but goes another direction. But a few minutes later he grabs my attention when he makes the effort to cross the large drainage ditch to head my way. To my surprise he keeps coming and I start having the mental discussion. How "handsome" is he?
He works the tree line 60yards in front of me. Scraping, rubbing, and licking branches. And as I look down at the annual scrape 14 yards from my tree, I knew where he'd end up in a few minutes.
Still undecided, I hook the string with my leather shooting tab and get comfortable. I'm only 9ft off the ground, but comfortably nestled in the canopy with branches below and behind me, and fully confident I wont be seen, since i'm wearing my favourite plaid shirt. He steps to the opening, calm, close, broadside, and i decide.... he is handsome
Good luck to everyone this fall
