Pelee 2021 week 2
First time on Pelee for the hunt so I didn’t know entirely what to expect.
We had a great time and our dog did quite well. All the birds we harvested seemed of good size and health. Our first day was nice and sunny, the preceding two days were rain. Hunting was quite exciting especially on the first day, we had multiple flushes at a time, the birds seemed to be everywhere. The second day was fairly successful aswell, but by the third day the dog definitely had work for it.
We got checked by the CO’s and talked to them a few other times. They were quite friendly and professional and were out in full force working at keeping things under control on the island.
We certainly witnessed some possible illegal hunting methods (as other have mentioned) but did not have any ill-runs with people.
I did notice that this group of hunters are not over friendly , as I’ve encounter a better sense of comradery between hunters in many of the other places I’ve been for various hunts.
All in all Pelee Island was well worth the trip !

Great pictures. Brings back good memories of hunting with my Dad.

Thanks for starting this thread C.F. Also, love your pictures NP. That last "mixed bag" shot is cool. Glad the boy had fun. I would have liked to have you over for a campfire, but the weather sure wasn't conducive.
I hunted this past week with my Father. This years birds seemed smaller than previous hunts, but they sure could fly and run. It made for some challenging situations. I used both dogs. My Drahthaar was the more effective producer. His points are brief and rare. If he senses the pheasant is moving, he gets on them hard and puts them in the air. On the second and third day, the birds had been pushed into thicker cover and you needed a dog with some pheasant experience to get them rousted up. Shooting, at times, was like a driven shoot and it was crucial to have a dog that can find dead and track wounded.

I noticed there seemed to be a lot of hunters from the U.S. I am going by the number of US plated vehicles on the ferry. Surprising people travel from far and wide for this hunt.

We hunted some open fields with my younger wirehair and shot a few birds over him but only if he pointed and held for me to grab him for the flush/shot. He is a work in progress. He has that drive though to hunt dead, which is a bonus. Judging by the number of unrecovered birds we found, a lot of dogs don't have this trait.

Nice pics Ninepointer, glad you enjoyed the hunt ... it was nice to meet you on the ferry ride going across. I really enjoyed the hunt as always, birds were nice strong flyers, and there were more than plenty all over the place. My older GSP did great, and the pup also found some birds on her own, so she is coming along nicely. I didn't really see any hunters breaking the rules, mind you, I usually hunt the fields were there aren't too many others around, as there is plenty of space on Pelee nowadays if you want to avoid the crowded/more popular areas.
Looking forward to going again next year!

Yeah definitely a few hunters from the USA that came up for the hunt, saw a few plates from New York, Michigan, and even one from Alabama!

Hey Ninepointer,
I know that spot with the old relic, stumbled upon it and took a picture of it myself a few years back.
Brought me a smile to see your pic.
