This a very nice thread for hunters that is still learning. Like myself.
What sound do you make while calling grouse, btw

Interesting question. Where do you get the idea?
I hunted Hazel Grouse in Europe with a call, it's a very common hunt.
I asked about the same with NA grouse (ruffed, spruce etc) and NEVER heard about anyone calling them.

Edit: I now see it's super old thread and I already replied in it.

I've never attempted calling grouse while hunting, however, for the past 8 years (excluding covid years) the mnrf has given permisssion to the dnr of New York to live catch spruce grouse here to be released in the Adirondack region of New York state to increase not only the number of grouse but to also rejuvenate the gene pool .Spruce grouse are protected in New York state.
This is done in summer using a digital call.Once the call is answered by the hen,she is located, and a fishing rod with a noose at the end (made from whipper snipper thread) is used to capture her.Unless ALL her chicks can also be caught, the brood is released. They are then kept in a blow up tent and fed blueberries and electrolytes (mixed with water to keep them calm).
They ( the participants which includes a tech and a biologist) seemed to think the call would not be as successful if there were no chicks involved, and, they had never heard it done with ruffed.I think the tameness of the spruce grouse compared to the ruffed may be a factor.

I hunted grouse with a guy who would beat his chest in an imitation of grouse drumming in the belief one might respond. Never did happen. I'd rather rely on the dog.
