I would say that was a bit more than a bloody nose.

You certainly kicked the s out of JAPANESE CIVILIANS, MANAGING TO INCINERATE SOME 800,000 SOULS.

In your more recent wars not a lot of positive news.

Since 2010, more than 65,000 veterans have died by suicide – more than the total number of deaths from combat during the Vietnam War and the operations in Iraq and Afghanistan combined.

Japan BTW is 7% smaller in land mass than California so I would say they did pretty well up against America. So much so that the Yanks were fearful of taking them on in the mainland, Operation Downfall was cancelled in favor of dropping two atomic bombs on mostly civilians.

If I were you Joe I would not be crowing to much about what your country did.

The sneak attack on America at Pearl Harbor was simply a copy of the Sneak attack by the American navy in its attempt to be a colonial power when they attacked the Spanish Fleet of Manila. They stole the Philippines from the
Spanish and then started a war with the Philippino's who wanted their independence and had actually helped the AMERICANS DEFEAT THE SPANISH INLAND.

So Joe when you invade another area of the World, half way around the globe from your own country, things will come back to bite you in the , something the Yank's have failed to learn over the years.
Gilroy - go read a history book or two... Japan was the aggressor here FFS.

Reply. You just proved my point that Japan gave America much more than a bloody nose. So much so that in the end being afraid to lose so many more soldiers they resorted to dropping two bomb's on mostly civilians. NOTHING TO BE PROUD OF.

If you were limited to name one thing that contributed to the defeat of the axis powers during WWII any historian worth his salt would tell you it was the giant industrial power of the U.S. - more ships, tanks, planes were being built than the enemy could destroy -

Reply. Yes that is true Joe America was great at production and lets not forget it was not free

"The debt was to be paid off in 50 annual repayments commencing in 1950. Some of these loans were only paid off in the early 21st century. On 31 December 2006, Britain made a final payment of about $83m (£45.5m) and thereby discharged the last of its war loans from the US."

And as far as the U.S. needing other countries to become a super power - come on give me a break - Europe was always getting into trouble and had to get help to survive let along help other others -
Reply. America only helps other countries when its in her own strategic interests.[/QUOTE]Gilroy,

There is a really great podcast called Hardcore History by Dan Carlin.
6 part series with in-depth coverage of WWII pacific theatre.
Not just events, but rather decision making and atmosphere of the time.

Would really recommend to listen to it prior to giving ideologic rants about it

America in those days was something special - those living then were called the greatest generation for a reason - the sad thing is that America is gone - like the American frontier - gone - never will this country reach the level of greatness that it once had - why? - because it is no longer made up of people of moral character - those running the show now are nothing but a bunch of Godless progressives who just like to tear things down and replace them with garbage -
Those were special days weren't they? Blacks were at the back of the bus and anti-miscegenation was the law in most states because the "greatest generation" wasn't going to put up with uppity white women marrying outside their race. Women knew their place and it was the kitchen preferably barefoot and pregnant. If they got knocked up it was have the kid or look for a coat hanger wielding midwife in a back alley. Homos were in the closet where they belonged, Elvis' hips were too provocative for TV and Lucy and Ricky slept in separate beds.

Good riddance to those "special days" and three cheers for the people who ended them and are fighting their return to this day.

The Japanese got what they deserved for there attack and I for one am proud to call America my friend and to say Canada and the US are ww1 and ww2 Champs and if that offends you or any one for that matter please feel free to leave as I could care less. It was the person who started this thread that started wandering down memory lane with wistful recollections of those "special days."

The real champs of WWII were the British and the Russians. They took the greatest beating while the continental U.S. and Canada escaped relatively unscathed.

    I agree with that.

Just pondering on this all though ... if we were Japanese at the time, would we be saying the good guy won?
    Here's my perspective ...

It's all about good vs. evil, isn't it? And what we interpret to be good or evil.
To understand what is truly good, and what is truly evil ... well, there will always be different perspectives of who the villain is.
But here's perhaps a clue to WHEN it's evil vs. good.
I find when the people of a country band together with purpose, it generally is for good reason.
When you have a few leaders and military commanders forcing war on the nation, it is generally for evil reason.

I'd like to hear from those old enough to know the circumstances in WW2 perhaps, and whether people in Canada and the USA to stand up and fight ... which I believe is the case. So this is an example of where the people of a country stand for a a purpose.

On the other hand ... was Japan's strike on Pearl Harbor something the common-Japanese citizen stood behind? Or was that conspired by only a few powerful guys at the top?

It would be his post to take in any direction he chooses and he made no mention of any of the detritus that you are talking about so please try to stay on topic or start a new thread. Cheers.

He took the topic in a new direction and I responded to his new topic. The person who is taking it off topic is you by suggesting that a post that is on topic is off topic when it isn't.

I did not say otherwise, did I ? FFS. Perhaps you read my post and hastily fired from the hip, you do have that tendency. IF you are making reference to my last line of the paragraph, that reference is about the American Navy invading another area half way around the World, that
being the Philippines which was talked about in the paragraph above.

Perhaps then you are the one that might need to read up on some American history.
