Boxing Day Button
My youngest son is home for a few days this Xmas so decided to try our luck this afternoon. Managed to get him on some deer about 20 minutes before last light. 3 does and a button buck came down the trail he was set on and being the good son he is he respected my wishes and took the fawn and left the mommas alone:

I got to spend the afternoon sipping whiskey at the wood stove while he put some meat in the freezer. Life is good.

Congrats to your son on a late season harvest.
This year I took a newish hunter out deer hunting and ask him the same question what to shoot if you must make a choice between a doe or fawn although he can't give me an answer right away but after I explained to him although he bring home less meat but it's better to take the fawn because the it may not make it though the winter without mama and he kindly accepted that.
It is easy to say than done and kudos to your son J.

Take one button buck, one deer out of the herd. Take a doe, it could be three deer out of the herd the following year….
