Thread: Will a Winch run off a cigarette lighter?

    Always the possibility of using a small block and tackle set up. I made one years ago to lift deer for butchering. Another possibility, use a boat winch bolted to the inside of the back of your truck box.

    I thought about the boat winch but don't they need a full 360 degree turn on the handle to work? I don't think there's enough clearance to get a full rotation. Seems like the block and tackle is the simplest and easiest to set up. And I do have a 2T hoist that I can maybe use.

    It never even dawned on me to use the trailer connector for power. Anyway, I caved and actually read the specs in the manual. It said the winch needed a minimum of 12 Amps which is considerably larger than a fish finder battery. Given this, I came up with the brain wave to use my little 2 ton Beaver hoist as the simplest solution. By hand I can lift the stern of the boat onto the tailgait and use the hoist to drag it most of the way into the box.
    Yep, sometimes the simplest mechanical solutions are the best.

    I saw a guy with a boat winch mounted to his back rack for clearance and ran the cable through a snatch block on the bed floor to direct it out the back.

    I knew better than to mention on this site that I read the manual finally. Thats akin to Greatwhite admitting to his wood pile falling over. (See, GW, I didn't even mention it fell on your wifes car)

    Now you got wondering if I lost my mind lol.
    This was a long time ago but I do know for sure I installed a winch on a Honda Big Red three wheeler. lol
    Maybe my brain is fuzzy on how I hooked it up?
    If I remember correctly there was a cigar lighter plug in (or I got my bikes mixed up??) but I think there was also a two prong connection on the side maybe that's where I plugged it in??? I'm pretty sure it wasn't directly on the battery.
    I think I kept the winch so will check wiring if I can find it.

    You right Hunter..I have the owners manual for my 84 Big Red in front of me...It's an aux 12v DC power supply just beside the headlight mounting bracket. It's 12V 60 Watt (5 AMP) outlet. It even recommends AWG 18 -AWG 20 wire. I still have the black rubber plug it for it..they usually get lost
