x2- and then some. Way back,my Mom would make sure we eat healthy, and she did worked at it.
We were not poor-but far from well off. We had what we needed-but she was keeping eye on every "penny".
We had variety, flavorful meals, all the carbs-proteins-veggies we needed.
Yet -it was more often simple ,then fancy.

Fancy was for Sunday-for Christmas-Easter-and when visitors would come.

That was a way of life -and we were quite OK.
Not just us-the whole Generations, the whole place-the whole country.

    Not that hard!

Alas-we are all going towards the fancy:all day-every day.
if aint fancy -it is no good.

Well said. A symptom of the 'me' generation where everything has to be instant and extravagant. People have become bored of the tried and true.
We've lost the simple ability to grow a vegetable garden, fix things around the house, do without something, or even screw in a lightbulb.

It's easy and affordable to eat healthy. Some general rules of thumb:

-Eat fresh fruits and veggies (or frozen, which is cheaper)
    -Avoid overly processed foods
    -Drink water
-Avoid sugar and opt for natural sweeteners like raw honey, agave or pure maple syrup
-Avoid excess sodium, nitrates, msg, preservatives
-Avoid excess caffeine, especially late in the day
    -Avoid excess alcohol
-Eat more lean protein to fill you up
-Eat healthy fats like olive oil, nuts, eggs, avocado
-Saturated fats are not bad like they said...beef tallow, lard, butter, coconut oil (in moderation)
-Watch portion sizes, especially with simple carbs (white bread, white pasta, white rice, white potatoes, etc.)
-Try to get 7-8 hours sleep every 24 hours
-Sleep in a dark room and try to avoid screens late at night for a deeper sleep

Essentially everything you eat turns to sugar in the form of glucose & glycogen. Some foods just get absorbed much more quickly, which spikes your blood sugar. If you are very active on a particular day, you can get away with eating more carbohydrates. If you are just sitting around the house all day and you have toast with breakfast, a sandwich for lunch, a donut for a snack and a huge bowl of spaghetti for dinner...that's too much and will lead to fat gain.

Try and be conscious of what you eat in total for the day and pull the plug once you hit a certain threshold, even if you feel a little hungry that's ok. You're not going to starve if you don't have 2 slices of cheesecake right before bed

Yes, I am a victim of brown bread. It's the things you don't think of, sometimes (the road to hell is paved with good intentions, as they say).
Anyone want to share a homemade bread recipe they recommend?

I'm good at avoiding the usual suspects, canned soda, fruit juice, unnecessary sugars in coffee or tea. I also think it's really important to get outside, even on the cold days. We recently added a puppy to our homestead, so I've been out every morning for our 2k walk (at least), and it's been wonderful for my mental health.

    Some scary stuff in there.

Not a recipe, but I have been off white and whole wheat breads for a long time. The only brand I buy is from the company that has the same name as the reindeer with the red nose (don't know if we can post company names). It's one of the few with no added sugar or only 1 gram and no corn syrup. There's another with the name that starts with D but no where the same quality.

Amen to that! A little fresh air is always good. What kind of puppy did you get?

A beagle! We had Jack Russels growing up, so there's a bit of a learning curve.

Grew up with 20,000 chickens. Like to eat them still but if i ever encounter a live chicken again in my lifetime it will be one too many. Old man sold off the quota when he retired. Nobody in the family wanted any part of it.

The wilderness is not a stadium where I satisfy my ambition to achieve, it is the cathedral where I worship.

I live where I can have chickens. Unfortunately it is all the other critters that try to get to them before I do that discourages me from owning a few. Much easier to go store bought for now.
