Picking a Day: Solunar Calendar
Hey all, hope you are well. I have a question about picking days to head out, and was wondering if y'all could lend a hand.
I am lucky enough to have the ability to pick and choose my days when it comes to ice fishing. I almost exclusively fish Simcoe, and when I do it tends to be Cooks Bay on a weekday (to avoid all the commotion). I get out around once a week. I pay attention to the solunar calendar when hunting, but I don't know about using it for fishing. Do you guys look at it for fishing, or would temperature, cloud cover, or any other factors come into play for you before the solunar trends? OODMAG posts the darn calendar in each issue, so I thought I'd ask. All the saltwater guys rave about it given that they fish tidal waters, but I haven't a clue as to whether or not it is impactful for an inland lake like Simcoe.
Anyways, thanks for the response.

It works for me especially for ice fishing but I'd never not go fishing because of it.

I just don't have enough experience to comment on it myself....so you find that there's increased activity when you have the right day?

For sure even for a day or two before and after. If you're having a slow day without any bites just start playing with your phone, it works for my buddy but then again he misses most of them.

X2, works for me also.
Fishing is definitely more active on “best days”
I’m to the point where I will stay home when their calling for a south wind all day.
Would be nice if OOD would add “Guide to best fishing days” on their calendar.

I generally pay more attention to atmospheric pressure. High pressure with cold clear weather seems to slow the bite down in my experience. There are always exceptions but that seems to be a trend i observe on Nipissing

I follow it but don't look at the solunar calendar until after I go hunting or fishing and see how close it is. I'm with the above post on this one Barometric Pressures play a big role.

Just to be clear, you mean a day or two after a full/new moon?
And why the south wind as a deterrent? I would have thought that a switch from the prevailing W/NW winds would be beneficial.
Thanks for the input.

I never do good fishing with a South wind, they don't seem to bite much on these days.
