Default Wild Pig Surveillance Program is seeking volunteers (Northwestern Ontario)

The OFAH and the Invading Species Awareness Program are looking forvolunteers, especially in Northwestern Ontario, to participate in The Wild Pig Surveillance Program(WPSP)
    HOW DOES THE PROGRAMWORK?
Volunteers will receive our loaner kits, which include one pre-programmed camera, two 16gb memory cards, a safety lockbox with padlock, a python lock for lockingto tree, eight AA batteries, keys and a “heavy duty” box with foam inserts.Volunteers will be asked to keep an eye on the landscape for invasive wild pigs(Sus scrofa).
After a successful program launch last year, we’re hoping to keep themomentum going in 2022 by getting 50 trail cameras on the landscape.
In consultation with the province’s wild pig program, we are hoping to placea majority of the surveillance cameras in Northwestern Ontario, near theManitoba and Minnesota borders. However, no matter where you are, don’thesitate to volunteer.

If you would like to participate, you are required watch the WPSP webinar, hosted by Project Lead Brook Schryer and OFAH Wildlife Biologist, Dr. Keith Munro

a reward for pig images from hunters camera would go longer way than giving out 50 cameras I would think.

Isn’t it just a “loaner kit”?

Now that would bring in 1000 of cameras in this watch the Pig game. All throughout Ontario.
More cameras-more chance to see something.

But -that would also require some common sense to start with.

Goes along with: flying the badly endangered Caribou off the Slate island ,instead of flying the wolves off the island. And do all this on time-not almost in the last minute.

I don't think 50 cameras are going to be a game changer. I personally have about 8 out from spring to xmas as well as there being 5 other cams on the 100 acre property as well. I would hazard a guess at least 30-40 THOUSAND cameras are out in the wild, and this is probably a lowball #. I do not know offhand the total number of deer hunters there are in Ontario, but in my opinion an average of 1 camera per hunter would not be outlandish.
Maybe we should have some kind of poll on the subject and extropalate (ie. twist the data to fit my numbers) to get a better idea on numbers of game cams out there.

Hmmm, sounds like they want the cameras where I deer hunt. I should inquire about getting one.

What is the point of this surveillance campaign? With the damage that is capable from these animals, it doesn’t make sense that they won’t allow us to shoot them, but we can take pictures.

I remember years ago there was a place called Boar and Arrow, up around Arbor Vitae I think. They were a boar hunting outfit. If I remember correctly, a big storm blew down a bunch of timber that smashed their fences, and the boars escaped. I heard of some sightings in the Hwy 600-619 area, but I’ve not heard of any for quite a while.
