I always snell my hooks. It allows for a more straight pull into flesh than tying it on using the eye which lets the hook tilt and plow.
I have an old carp fishing book and the author was a fan of reverse barb hooks, barb on the outside edge as opposed to the traditional spot on the inside of the bend.
