    Default Rideau River Crayfish

    Hi,
The Rideau is literally crawling with crayfish. I was fishing behind Carleton U., and the crayfish were as thick as blackflies in season. A couple even crawled up my leg - and they were pretty damn big.

I later learned they're an invasive species of crayfish - the rusty crayfish. They're big enough to make it worthwhile to trap them and do a crayfish boil shore lunch!

    Cheers,
    Neil

Alright, I think you're having a bit of fun with me. I'm just getting back to the outdoors, and I really was surprised how many there were.

I didn't realize my comment would shout: "Look at the new guy!"

    Cheers,
    Neil

Sorry I was not trying to poke fun at you. I have just never seen very large cray fish but I know the invasive ones can grow large.
The ones I have seen are only the small native ones. Those large invasive ones can still be eaten.

    Hi,
Oh! I really thought you were teasing me. No worries even if you were, it's all good. :-)

I was right behind Carleton U, at the time. The buggers were 3-4" long!

    Cheers,
    Neil

So down off the Rideau Canal Pathway. Actually I have never been down there. When I have time I will try to check it out.

Curious to know whether it's safe to eat fresh water crayfish.

It most certainly is, I use to eat them a few times when I went to College in Lindsay.

As a kid, I spent many a summer day fishing the Rideau River around Billing’s Bridge. I have vivid memories catching crawdads under the bridge.

That is a lot of work for one bite. Hate to have to live on them little critters.
