    Default Snow geese?

I took the kids out for a country drive on the weekend. Just outside of Innisfil we saw a field full of snow geese. I didn’t think they meandered this way. Very cool to see.

I seen a flock in a field about 20 years ago outside of Beaverton, was the first and only time I've ever seen them.

You sure they were Snow geese, and not a big flock of Tundra Swans? The Swans are migrating through in very large numbers right now -- I've seen a few fields down my way in KW with 500+ birds in them.

    Hello Birdbuff,

I agree with Sprite ... they were probably Tundra Swans ... thousands were down here at Long Point last week but most left the night before St. Patrick's Day (Thursday) due to the mild temperatures. Once the ice is gone here they are gone too ... heading north.

I have previously posted a beginner's guide to "Swan Idenfication" on this forum but you can read my full cover letter to the Provincial Government with an eight-part presentation including an additional four (4) addendums regarding the implementation of an Ontario Tundra Swan Season by 2025.

PS I will be posting my entire Tundra Swan presentation on this "waterfowl" forum in weekly installments starting this fall. I will repost my "Swan Identification Guide" on Monday for those "waterfowlers" who may be interested.

Yes they could have been swans. Size wise, I couldn’t tell. I don’t see swans all that often either so I could have mixed them up. Still a cool sight to behold.

Interesting. Took the back roads home from Kemptville on Thursday and saw a flock of white mixed in with Canada geese. Thought snow geese as well, now wonder if the were swans. Should have stopped and confirmed but there wasn’t much of shoulder to pull over. It’s nice to see birds either way.

Were they larger or smaller than the Canada geese?

We have snows around here, more towards Winchester and east but they end up in the Kemptville, North Gower area on occasion.

I had a flock of 100+ Tundra Swans in a field just north of Orkney early last week. Was not sure until i stopped the car and rolled the window down. Even though they were at least 100 yards away the noise was loud and unmistakable.

I was on a guided hunt 4 years ago in a field off of Lake St Clair and a flock of snows came by. The guide got all excited and tried real hard to get them to come into range, but no luck we just watched them fly by. Have seen them at Rondeau for a lot of years, not in great numbers though. Usually just one or 2 in a flock of Canada's. I missed one about 5 years ago, it was in a flock of about 500 geese we jumped out of a pond. We should have gotten our limit with the 9 shot we took in total, but we all were trying for the snow goose and missed. So they are around even way down in the SW
