Default Would you rather hunt deer in the bush or on field edges ?

    Simple question!

Personally I like hunting the bush, I like scanning through the trees. and warmer with the dumbed down wind.

Although I usually make my way out to the field edge once it starts to get dark to see if I can catch one feeding. Only down side to the bush for me is the darkness creeps up fast even when its still legal shooting time. And when its windy the trees rattling start tripping you out a little haha.

In the bush always! Close up and personal. Gets your adrenaline going when they sneak around and you can't move in the slightest.

I've taken them down as close as 15 yards while just sitting with my back against the tree and some branches piled in front to break up my silhouette. Anything from does to 8 point taken this way at all times of the day.

Also helps when you use the old school lever 30-30

For me I,am always thinking ahead and recovery so I tend to hunt the field edges when the weather is bad or at last light shooting times.

The deep bush is much more challenging towards last light which as you say you loose much faster and simply seeing at that time. I do not have an ATV so this plays a big factor also. If you have a feeder yours hunting over even in deep woods it is always pretty interesting to see what pops by, I have had everything from rabbits, partridge, squirrel, pine marten..... but from a comfort level I probably prefer the field edges, which is where the apple trees are. I have to say my overall success in the field edges is way better than the deeper bush.

I like to go off the beaten path into the least travelled area of the bush saving field edges for 'yote whackin' time.
If a tree falls on your ex in the woods and nobody hears it,you should probably still get rid of your chainsaw. Just sayin'....

Bush for me. I still hunt or hunt with dogs. Nothing gets your adrenaline running like the hounds a barking and a buck running down the trail. Or the sight of buck feeding in the oaks after a brush of snow. Open sights and fast shooting. Also on the seven hundred acres we hunt there’s only about 30 acres of over growing fields.
They say the only good wolf is a dead wolf, If that’s the case than I’ve reformed many a wolf.

Field edges definitely for me on the family farm in Haldimand.
The only deer I ever lost over the years (20 yd lung shot) was in the big bush on the farm, shot with a Rage mechanical broadhead that I tried for the first time. Spent 3 hours searching in a bush I’d hunted in for over 30 years, never found it until 3 weeks later - threw the rest of those broadheads out!!
Now I use Excalibur mechanicals, and longest search for shot deer has been 25 yards. Much prefer the field edges now!

Bush-if we can call tall trees a bush.I rather call them forest.
There is nothing like sitting in a tree-breathing in the scent of the decaying vegetation, feeling the cold air in my lungs, seeing the magnificent fall taking over the lush forest, listening to the branches swaying and swishing, the leaves trembling, and watching the elusive sun shine on a spot here-then there.

Hearing the crack of a twig under the hoof of an approaching deer,or seeing a dab shadow moving thru in a distance is just a big bonus.

    To each their own.

Great responses! I fond sitting on a field edge gets a little boring for me. When I'm in the bush it let's me scan through all the trees and limbs looking for a body or a rump patch and as some of you said as well hearing the odd snap of a twig or a crack of ice! I'd like to go deeper into the forest sometimes but the property i hunt on you can get very lost very easily especially in the dark. Shot a doe last year on a field edge and she ran through 2 swamps just inside the bush. Finally found her and it took us 2 hours to pull her out of the brush. Instead of just dragging her through the water we went alllllll the way around on dry ground and almost got lost twice wasn't a fun time LOL

Both for me, I usually get one in the bush early season and another later season on the edge. I have shot deer double lung and they have gone 400yds, good think it was in the field and beans or corn was cut, although my dog now is a great tracker.

In the past I've tried to be rigid and hunt one or the other. Normally those years I ended up struggling late in the year to fill a tag. Now I simply hunt where Scouting shows the most deer and deer sign
early season I normally hunt field edges come the rut it's normally as close to bedding areas as I can get. late season I just pour the bait to them and pray
