Cover scents do not work by definition. Deer can smell weaker and stronger scents simultaneously. I'm not sure why people pour so much time and effort into this when the science is readily available.

Cover scents were never intended to mask human scent .

They are intended to give hunter a little bit of an edge.A few more steps from the deer,a few more yards for the hunter, few more seconds for preparing for the deer...etc.
There are good and bad cover scents, there are people believing in them or not-using them successfully or not.

I would have bet money there would have been a "just hunt the wind" comment by now.
But I agree with gbk, all scent control products are about gaining a small advantage, not the absolute answer to deer knowing your there.

There is no way you can ever cover or eliminate 100% of your scent. But minimizing it and covering it may just give you that few steps you need to get the job done.
Its not an all or nothing situation as many people make it out to be.
And all the stories of dumb deer getting killed while the guy was wearing his work clothes and smoking a cigarette don't mean anything. Sure it can happen, like people all deer are different and may react differently.

But if you want to take some precautions to possibly give you a bit of an edge, and give yourself some more confidence, then all the power to you. If you don't want to do anything but rely on wind and thermals, then all the power to you as well.

I'm not a die hard scent control person, but I will take a few steps to minimize my scent. There is no science that will ever prove that it gives me any advantage, but for me its common sense and gives me a bit more confidence. I spend a few bucks a year making scent killer and using scent killer soap as opposed to irish spring. I still try my best to hunt the wind, but there are so many days that the wind is swirling that I'm glad I take a few extra steps.

Good post. There are a lot of products out there that are intended to dupe hunters into thinking that they can forget about taking proper precautions - being quiet, bathing regularly, washing and drying garments in scent-free environments, and minding the wind direction.
