Mallards still around?

What are the chances today to run in to mallards ? I'm thinking of hitting up a bond throw some mallard decoys and hopefully get me one or two.. I haven't seen much around lately that's why I'm asking, I have been seeing more black and white ducks, not sure what type that is, is it a diver ? Do they taste good ?

Guess if there's open water there's a chance. Better if you actually see them using the pond. As far as divers go Blue bills tend to be good the rest not so much, sounds though a bit of duck ID is in order though.

Black and white ducks ? Small ones could be Buffleheads and the larger ones could be Bluebills or Ringnecks ? Buffie's are a little fishy tasting but Blues and Blackjacks (Ringnecks) aren't bad.

I may be a bit off with the description, I drive by Rideau river often twords Kemptville and I see them on the water as I drive and that's all I notice, I'm in search online maps for a boat lodge there hoping to take the cano and do some hunt, haven't experienced that type of hunt before, would be sweet hunting new species

How about Redheads and Canvasbacks? Probably the best eating birds out of them all.

As for the whites and blacks you're seeing, likely Common Mergansers, Hooded Mergansers, Buffleheads or Goldeneyes -- or a combination of all four!

Are there Mallards around? Ducks don't magically appear on the ponds you're hunting -- scout the ponds you plan to hunt. That'll tell ya quick if there's Mallards around.

yup, however hard to mistake them for a black and white hence the bluebill reference.

I hear there is a fresh wave of Mallards at Long Point, Lake Erie. Water level is way down too.
