Someone once said "Is it your favourite lure because it catches fish or does it catch fish because its your favourite lure".
I fish Lake Ontario and Lake Erie, colour makes a difference, so does size, shape, and speed of lure/spoon when fishing. After having said that, there are days when everything works and days when nothing works. My general rule of thumb was to use dark lures on dark days and bright lures on bright days, glow lures also work well in any weather at depth.

Many moons ago I made a lure with the old style chrome bottle opener/can opener that was about 4" long. just attached a treble with wire and had atter, that puppy could cast a mile. I actually remember..... I think, catching a nice pike but the lure has been lost for 40 some odd years now.

Any lure will catch fish on any given day and depending on conditions presentation is a big factor. When the fish are on the bite a lure that is fished horizonally will catch fish. i.e. crank bait, spinner bait etc. Under adverse conditions, a cold front, you should be fishing tight to cover and fishing it vertically. i.e. jig and twister tail, jig and pig, plastic worm, and fished slowly keeping the bait in the strike zone as long as possible...

You mentioned that you eventually settled on a small selection of spinners? I have made spinners as well as fished with them longer than I can count, and honestly, the selection that exists today isn't for catching fish but simply to entice anglers to buy. When using spinners, I mostly use silver or gold unless I want to try something unique for fun, and I find that's more than enough.

My problem is I fish for about 12 different species.
I have lures divided into groups. Type, action, size, colour.
It gets easier when you see what works.
