A reader asks if it is legal to spear white sucker in this instalment of Ask A CO, and if any other fish are included in that distinction.
What can I but enumerate old themes,
First that sea-rider Oisin led by the nose
Through three enchanted islands, allegorical dreams,
Vain gaiety, vain battle, vain repose,
Themes of the embittered heart, or so it seems.

It's been about 35 years since I was last out spearing suckers - it's about this time of year - maybe more towards the end of April we would go.

When we were kids maybe 10-12 me and my buddy would go try and catch them by hand, reaching under the overhanging Creek bank and could always grab a couple on a good day. Never ate them, just had some fun since there were so many. Does anybody really eat them?

I don't know when the regulation came into effect but I hope the statute of limitations has been reached. LOL.

We used to spear suckers when I was teenager growing up north of the Soo. We did it at night and some drink may have been taken.

I know a few young lads in my neck of the woods may have done the same thing after dark years ago. From guys riding through the culvert to getting chased down the creek by an angry beaver, fun times.

We used to eat them pan-fried. My mom would also can them - Canned they are a bit like salmon without the salmon flavour.
A lot of people would eat them. More common than spear was dip netting at night at big culverts along roads.

I’ve eaten suckers that were canned and smoked. They were good eats!

Very interesting guys, I do still live fairly close to the spot we used to go, maybe I should try spearing them and cooking (I doubt I'd be fast enough to grab one now). If I ever get a spare minute that is....

Yes, big parties in small creeks, we caught them every which way.
We would can them with a tomato sauce.
    Good times.
