    Default Elk Tag Quota Down

Just about to put in for the elk tag draw and noticed a real drop in the quotas. That to bad but the elk must not be doing as well as we hoped.

Is there not a option to apply for a bull or cow tag in the draw?

Ontario used to have a healthy Elk herd. At one time,we could get a Deer/Elk tag combination. Obviously, whatever led to the herd demise, then, is still with us today. Maybe,re-introduction efforts may not have been such a good idea as originally thought.

I have never understood why there is a Elk hunt, why not capture them and relocate and start a new herd.

Elk were released in their traditional range during the re-introduction which makes perfect sense,of course. The Elk hunt shouldn't have been opened until a sizeable herd was solidly re-established. It looks like not enough study was done beforehand or,at the very least,no one thoroughly examined the initial data. It's still not too late to re-evaluate the old data and combine it with new data for a more accurate picture.

My friend drew a tag last season, from his trail cam pics on just one property I would say defiantly enough bulls to least have a couple tags for bulls, They were done in 10 minutes opening morning.
Beside our tags, the native are aloud to shoot a bunch and they will never stop till they are gone anyways, not all but the ones that don't care will.
Elk do a lot of damage and farmers were complaining from what I heard.

The rumors that I have heard regarding one herd is based around locals and farmers being fed up with the damage to crops and fences. At some point FN hunters began "removing" the herd from those properties.

This would have been around + / - 2010. That herd was sustaining/expanding its numbers. I have been told it has been pretty well eradicated.

Based on official hunter reports, hunting season has negligent (next to 0) effect on the herd dynamics.

What are official hunter reports ?
From what I remember when I looked at the harvest data over all the years since the hunt started , there has only ever been elk taken from 3 elk zones. So now they have made it so you can only apply to those 3 zones.
perhaps the elk never expanded past those areas?

We had a bull tag in 2012 and enjoyed hunting elk, although never saw any during the daylight hours!
Having secured a property for this year's hunt, we have not yet applied for a tag, because the quota is so ridiculously LOW.
Might as well spend the money on lottery tickets, and if I win, then I can BUY a good elk hunt in Alberta or elsewhere. (:-P
