The general rule of thumb is the shooter better be cut,clawed and bleeding before there's any justification for shooting a Bear out of season. Even during the open season,anyone shooting a Bear better be carrying a license and tag. I don't know what that guy was thinking,but,obviously,not much.

The old saying “shoot first, ask questions later” doesn’t pass the legal smell test. You have to prove that you exercised due diligence to avoid the encounter and shooting the animal including backing away.

The same logic applies to shooting an intruder.

I had a bear come up close to me once. I was cleaning up some grouse. I keep a slug in my pocket.. never had to use. 35+ yrs of hunting.

I used to hunt deer on crown land, but to get to the crown land you had to cross about 100yds of federal land first. We had to get a permit before we could cross that stretch and guns had to be cased the whole time and they checked to make sure we did exactly that. He knowingly carried a gun while hiking he gets what he deserves. A lot of people if you can see it you can shoot, just doesn't work that way. My turkey I shot this year at about 15ft had about 10 pellets in it just under the skin. Someone must have figured i can shoot it because I can see it.

I’m surprised that the threshold for self-defence is considered that high….I figured a bear hanging around, getting into garbage and buildings etc would be considered a ‘nuisance bear’ and fair game…

If it's around a residence - where it shouldn't be - the threshold is a lot lower. Especially if you have a shovel handy.
But in the bush - where you might expect a bear to be - that's different.
