The Way It Was
When I got out of the army back in the 50s I came home with some army clothes - included was a long brown field jacket and a pile cap with fur lined ear flaps - this is what I wore to go deer hunting - so you could imagine walking around in the woods all dressed in brown - when I look back it's a wonder I didn't get shot - but that's how things were in those days - a few hunters had red jackets but the most only had clothes that were available - people just didn't have the money to buy red jackets just for hunting and orange clothing wasn't even available - times sure have changed -
Didn't have any insulated boots either - just had regular shoes and put rubber boots over them - we called them goulashes(?) - and man did my feet get cold - if I stopped for any length of time my feet got so cold that I could hardly walk - but for some reason always looked forward to the start of hunting season - the good old days -

yeah brown always bad. Back in late 70's I was dragging a deer out to the trail been dragging for hours as I never hunted near the main trail. I was on the top of a big hill and stopped to get bearings and a bit of break. I heard this crashing running through a thicket at the bottom of the hill, I got a couple of flashes of brown, so dropped the rope and got gun ready as my dad was close by. I was about to raise the gun when out of the thicket came a guy running through the bush no orange on. That could have turned out so bad for both of us.

Last year it’s was -10c and windy. After hunting for three hours in a tree stand my friend asked if I was cold. I said no I have a heated vest on.
About 20y ago I had enough of crappy clothes and I started building what I call my all weather wardrobe. You have to find what works.
Btw
My friend wrote a book called The way it was then.

I still wear gloshes over my work boots at work in the winter. Keeps my boots dry then I don't get cold.
They would work good in the treestand, I've never really thought about bringing them hunting, But I might now lol

Remember my Father had a green hat had a hunter orange option that flipped over the green and of course the red checkered shirt. That's all he used for big game back when.
