Hunting in power lines in Fitzroy Harbour

Good morning all,

I have tried using the crown land maps and they are not user friendly.

Can anyone she some light on to what crown land exists in west Carleton that can be hunted on? Specifically the power line in fitzroy.

Power lines through areas where all the land around is private are generally private property to which Ontario Hydro has a legal right-of way. They are not crown land.

Welcome to the forum on your first post. That area may not be showing up on the maps because it crosses private property. Assuming hydro corridors are public property or Crown land can be an expensive mistake. OPG and Hydro One pay yearly stipends to property owners for maintainance access. Corridors may still be posted as private property with access denied to the public. Trespass to hunt charges can still be laid under The FWCA. The onus is on hunters and anglers to know who the property owners are and to secure permission to enter sometimes in writing.

That's good advice, Trimmer.

Lyle: I agree that the crown land atlas is a little challenging to use. I've started using the backroad map book online map tool, which makes it much easier to see where the crown land is - as long as you activate that map layer. It does not give you permitted uses, so the atlas is still valuable in that regard.

In an event, from what I can see, the power line corridor is not crown land - not until you get south of the Pakenham mountains closer to the SE shore of White lake.

The legal term for utilities crossing private land is an “easement”. This grants legal permission to the utility to cross private land but doesn’t usually confer any other right except to the utility except to enter and carry out maintenance on their facilities.

In my area the Hydro company permits walking accross their property for access to other areas for the act of hunting but does not allow hunting on the Hydro property itself. I doubt any area that has power lines allows the act of hunting on that property to prevent damage from bullets.

ihunter app and pay for the private land and crown boundaries. 40 bucks per year and I personally think it's worth it, especially if you like exploring.

Edit: Just looked up the area and the nearest huntable crown is around white lake.
