I'm local to the area and actually live on the lake. you are being dooped by what actually happened and the story (like most in the media) is extremely misleading
I was going to ask about the pic but more of who took the pic while this guy is standing there with not help the first responders.
Is it the boat launch at the round about in town ?

where he went through is less than 20 yards from the dock mount at the boat launch. I don't even think he would have been past the end of the dock in the summer time. 2.5' of water
but there's way more to the story. once again the media has decided to paint a dark picture of outdoor winter activities.
should he have been out there - nope

The only good ice I like is in an Old Fashion glass with some single malt.

Seems that the ice has tightened up. There was a portable hut out about 400 yds off shore out from the boat ramp in town. Still too early for me. The earliest I can remember being out from my place on the island was the 19th of November about 45 years ago. No snow on the ice and there was 4” of solid blue ice. Erie as hell seeing the weed growth through the ice motionless.

I took a walk out in front of my place last night. easy 6"+ everywhere I checked. not the best ice I've seen but safe enough for what I was doing 4" of good black ice 2"+ of white crappy stuff
