Just had the pup out to relieve himself and couldn’t believe the number of worms that were out on the front lawn. I mean hundreds. February 27 th . Never seen this before this early. Seems like the frost was just starting to let go of its hold and today after that rain this afternoon the worms came up for a breath of fresh air… Looks like the groundhog was right on with his prediction….

After reading this yesterday morning I headed out and the apartment parking lot was covered with worms wriggling about. They were a lot skinnier than "summer" worms but about the same length. Had I had some time I would have gone picking - it would have been easy to grab a few dozen.

Worms are up now ,ground is thawed the lady bugs are out aswell as a few flying insects lol.
What might become an issue with this early weather is the fruit trees and asparagus. Maybe a cold snap at the end of the month with a polar vortex. Maybe get another first ice naw I dout it would get that cold.

There’s open water here on Scugog and the lilac trees around the house are already starting to bud. If we do get a cold snap it could dampen the fruit production this summer. Last year we had a bumper crop…

Spring peepers are singing loud at my place tonight. About a month early. Can hear them inside the house with the windows closed.

This non-winter is real bad news for our trees. I cut firewood last week and was shocked to see large numbers of adult bark beetles still alive under the bark sheets on the dead elm. Usually they are all dead from the cold weather. Ditto for white pine weevil and spruce budworm.
