of course this fish has contributed to the lakes genetics for the last approx 55 years so I would have also understood if he wanted to keep it as well.. would have made the mount of a life time.
But I would have also returned it, just how I roll ....When you have a legit record you know its good...which is all that really counts.
I have 3 records and some close ones carp 55-1/4lbs, lake ontario nuke plant pickering honorable mention 19-1/4 lbs walleye nuke plant as well . yellow perch 3.5 lbs eastern Ontario. and small mouth bass 14 plus lbs in large Haliburton lake ....can I prove it...nope...

Your right, I totally agree with you that its fine to keep it as well since it is old anyways but its still a shame for the fact that your not going to eat it, so its almost a waste. You can still get a mount done with the pictures and measurements

It’s nice that he returned it, after all you can’t enjoyably eat something that big. If he wanted to keep it to get the record that would be understandable too, but wouldn’t it still be eligible for a C&R record after he videoed the measuring of it?
A bad day hunting or fishing is better than a good day at work.
