When I hunted bears with a crossbow from a tree stand, my personal rule was: quartering away, aim for the top of the crease where the closest arm meets the body, aim for the opposite front leg. The closest front leg should be reaching somewhat forward. I positioned my barrel next to a large rock, chained to a tree with the opening of the barrel situated to increase the likelihood the bear would stand the way I want. Never had an issue using this method.

I have taken 7 bears with my crossbow to date.

None made it past 30 yards.

I wait for the perfect broadside shot and let the arrow fly. I don't hesitate to get good footage... lol

This year's spring bear was my biggest to date(230lbs). My shot was actually a bit forward and hit the opposite shoulder. It was actually my shortest recovery around 15 yards or so.

I remember the video. Great hunt! I am thinking i will try the crossbow this fall. Have only ever taken one with the crossbow and oddly enough it was the largest i have ever taken at just shy of the 400 lb mark. Was a crime of opportunity while deer hunting in October. That bear was a 6 beer recovery - also a record. Shoulder mount of that beast:

Same boar hanging way off a 5 foot toboggan during the recovery:

I have to admit bear is my favorite hunt more than deer or anything else where i am concerned. Don't get me wrong i love deer camp and all the social/culture bits that make it special, but bear chasing bear solo on water access sites is just another level. Best eating meat there is and 100% the success or failure rides singularly on me.

The wilderness is not a stadium where I satisfy my ambition to achieve, it is the cathedral where I worship.
