It sounds like extra line in the curve might be giving the fish a chance to shake off the hook. You might try releasing a bit less line to keep the tension tighter and see if that makes a difference.

Yes, right and this is why I asked my question: how much line people usually give for the line’s bow (curve). If you give too much line then fish can easily shake off the hook. If it is too tight then you would get more false popups in case of unexpectable speed change or current etc.

the old school theory has always been that the slider would stop between 1/2 and 2/3's down at the max belly in the line
it has been proven that once it gets to that max belly it slowly continues down and normally comes to rest above the main release but this does take time and it has alot to do with speed and water temp

Finally got around to getting a pic of the terminal tackle.
With the snap can set the "fixed slider" at any depth and with the rubber pad when popped there is enough resistance to set the hook.

Guess yes would be the best answer. Got them from Angling Specialties years ago think the owner(Tom?) made them himself. The store front on 7 still there but if its open don't know believe the mississauga store closed.

to get your downrigger ball at 100 ft and still have 30 ft of lead, you let out about 105 ft of line to the clip (because √(100² + 30²) ≈ 104), then another 30 ft to your lure – so roughly 135 ft total. If you’re seeing a big loop, reel in a few feet so the line’s a bit tighter. That way you’ll feel the bite instead of getting pop‑ups.
