I am reading what fish hog said about groups of 2 to 5 hunters could never get a tag in the old draw. If every group of 2 to 5 hunters got a tag guaranteed and in some zones it was that way if you had the required group size they would be given out probably. Five times or more tags than they did give out which would have had a very bad effect on the Moose herd that said I think the old system was there to promote group hunting. More hunters could hunt and the rules were right in front of us all. I hunt in a larger group And this new system is no better or worse for us. Most of the complaints about the old system, I would bet came from hunters in the lower Ontario zones. The ones complaining probably made up a very small percentage of the overall hunters. They made more noise. In 2019 five hunters in a group got a bull tag in 15 areas. 2+ hunters got a bull tag in 1a,1c,1d,2,16a,18a,18b Two hunters in a group got a cow tag in 15 zones. Up toFive hunters got a cow tag in 25 zones.

Your right, it depends on the zone. My camp is in area 42. I'd like to moose hunt there someday. Sure I could go up to those very far away remote zones. I just choose not to go that far. If the new system is no worse for large groups, then I guess there is no problem. And I might someday get a tag. I don't choose to hunt in very large groups. Done it before, and its not my thing. The old system was very biased towards those groups.

A lot of people wanted and were so excited for this new system as they said that the prior one was biased in favour of groups as Individuals found it hard to get a tag. Now that those individuals got that out of their system and got their coveted tag, they are now finding that they have to wait a lifetime for another tag and go moose hunting, and now the complaining starts again. The only way for these folks that want to hunt moose now is to join a group.
I believe the old system worked fine as most people hunt moose in groups - that has not changed. Like or not, "ghost" hunters or whatever you call them, are legitimate licensed hunters and IMO they can do what they want with the license they legally buy. There is definitely a beauty about being a lone wolf hunter, not being accountable to anyone, but for practical and safety reasons the traditional way was and still is to hunt moose in groups. I know that OFAH also supports groups for moose hunting as I read in one of the OOD magazines articles.
IMO the old system should be brought back, perhaps with some tags reserved for individuals based on how may years applying - kind of like a hybrid system of the old and new systems. Also, I agree you cant have "mega" groups, so the group size should also be limited somehow.
What we should be worrying the most about is the dwindling moose populations as that is the limiting factor first and foremost.
I much prefer the new system. It could be improved - but is much better than the previous system.
