Default Using a Handgun on Private Property

For those that use and own handguns, are you allowed to use them on private property (farm, gravel pit, etc.) if you have permission from the owner? Would you be able to get an ATT for the private property that you would be shooting on?

Let me know about any personal experiences you may have doing this. This forum is very knowledgeable so I am sure that I will hear some anecdotes from more knowledgeable people than myself.

You basically have to be a member of a range that allows handguns or a collector to own one and/or move it. A real pain in the butt. You could probably get away with shooting one in the back forty but NOT RECOMMENDED and you risk large fines, and loss of PAL etc., possibly even jail time.

That about sums it up! I can take any one of my rifles out to the back of my property and shoot all day, but can't do that with my handgun?

At one time u could hunt with hand guns in Canada and we banned carrying them back in 1969. I am not quite old enough to have seen thoes days. But some of you out there must remember.

I know my Dad carried one when he worked at the bank, he carried one up until 1970. He's only 65.

Respecting my redneck roots, my dad and his friends used to take the revolvers to the dump and shoot rats on some saturday nights- they must have been quite the ladies men! lol

After looking into it more, this seems like the right answer that only ranges are allowed. As Moe mentioned, I wonder what it would take to convert private property to a shooting range. That may be a topic for another thread.

In my experience dealing with the Chief Provincial Firearms Office real difficult.Even ranges that have been approved in past years are having a real hard time.Heck I can remember only a few years back some of the police ranges were closed down due to bad ventilation by the MOE.It would cost a pile of money and a big pain in the a--

The only possible way for using a handgun on private property would be IF you own and live on the property; IF it's big enough to have your own personal range;IF it's completely safe;IF it's out of sight and not within earshot of anti-hunting/gunning whinin',a**hole neighbors. Now,I know that's a lot of IFs,but, look at it this way.Who's gonna squeal on you,YOU?? You haven't left your property so an ATT doesn't even enter the picture. Besides, the Police CANNOT arbitrarily "just show up" on private property. If they do,there better be a darn good reason and "just checkin'" sure won't cut it.So,just keep quiet about it and quit worrying about what might or might not be 100% legit. If we all keep sweating the little stuff,we'd never have a decent life at all, right ?? Just be safe and use your noodle.Life's short and times wasting.

I looked into making my own "approved range" on my 50 acres and was told your looking at a lot of headaches and BS and not to mention it would cost upwards of $20,000. And the thing that I dont understand is that I can go out and shoot my 338 RUM all day which can travel for miles under the right circumstance but I cant shoot any of my handguns that generally drop before 100 yards. What gives???
If hunting is a sport, than I'm an athlete.
