Traditional ml in Canada

Hello. I have been shooting traditional ml for over 30 years. I have been searching for other enthusiasts in my area. It's like a needle in a hay stack. I find it hard to believe that people would not enjoy the challenge of shooting a ml. It's kinda disappointing with all the hype of shooting high power varmit rounds and all there tactical rifles , I just don't get it. I love the challenge of working on the perfect combanation of lube patch thickness and ball diameter. I know my rifle inside out and what it is capable of. It is so much more gratifying shooting a ml. Anyone can grab a handful of over priced primium centre fire bullets and jam them in there banana clips and pretty much hit what ever they are aiming at through a scope. Ml played a huge part in canadian history and to have it just forgotten is very upsetting. So I'm done venting and I guess in will jump back into the hay stack and see if I can't flush out a few more enthusiasts. Thanks R Webster.

Mr.remington, first of all, welcome to OOD. What do you shoot, flinter or percussion cap? I have a couple of pc rifles myself. A .50 cal. T/C Hawken and a .36 cal. full stock Tennessee rifle. I would be interested in your hunting and shooting stories and I am sure others on this board would be as well.

Thank you. I use a 45 cal. Flintlock Kentucky rifle. My dad made it back in 1968. I also have the use if his other ml. His latest is a Barnet trade gun and a 58 cal Hawkins half stock. We are planning to build a new 32 cal squirrel gun I can't wait. One if my fondest memories is the smell of burnt black powder in his old field coat. I will post some pictures of a few if his builds. I currently only have a T/C Encore .50 inline. I would like to get a flintlock as I really enjoy shooting a muzzle loader. I currently don't own any center fire rifles. The problem I am having is finding a decent flintlock.

.58 cal Zouave replica kit gun here just love it. A little heavy for my arthiritis but great in blind on a shooting stik . Been using it since 1976 on deer / coyote , chucks . I'm not in your area but good luck .

Good to have more traditional muzzleloader shooters on the Forum. Welcome!

I've been shooting traditional muzzzleloaders since 1960. I have an original antique .625 smoothbore percussion Trade musket, a 12 ga Pedersoli (Navy Arms) SxS percussion shotgun and a .50 cal Lyman percussion Trade rifle. I've taken almost every type of small game with them and have carried them deer hunting but never had a shot.

I used to be active in the Rendezvous scene but have pretty much given that up. Do you do the Rendezvous thing? If not and you want to get into it I can give you contact information.

Have you seen Huntaway's 3 shot offhand challege in the muzzzleloader forum?

Have you looked at the various Lyman rifles? They are great guns for the money. Several friends of mine have Traditions flintlocks and are pleased with them. If you have a bit more $ then the Davide Pedersol rifles are very good. If you have lots of money look at John Clark's rifles. www.clarkindustries.on.ca

If you haven't heard of him, Peter Alexander lives fairly close to you and offers a great access to some fabulous Black Powder experiences.

He even runs a course where you can go and build an ML over a 2 weeks course. '

I managed to get a nice 4 point buck two years ago with my 45 but that's it as far as game. I have let a few does walk by. I have seen the 3 shot challenge but need to put my lock back together and then I'm up for the challenge.
