    Default Neatsfoot oil patch lube

Hello. Has anyone tried neats foot oil for a patch lube in cold weather? It appears to freeze somewhere between -15 to -20 deg. C. For a non petroleum lube it sounds pretty good.

The title caused me too look.....Mestsfoot Oil

I can't see why it wouldn't work, neadsfoot oil is from rendered Bovine parts. There was a lot of discussion here last year of guys having success with Bear fat...I have some patches in the meat drawer of the fridge waiting for trial come spring.

Never though about using it though, so thanks for the idea....worth a trial.

There's tons of different types of lubes. On fellow on another site swears by Liquid Wrench. I've used MooseMilk, WonderLube, Bear Fat/Bee's Wax, Pre-Lubed, Dry Lubed and Spit.

I've heard of using Mink Oil, Crisco and just about any other slimy thing available. Pick your poison.

    But I can honestly say I haven't tried Neats.......yet!

I have read not to use petroleum based lubes. But I have read that people use all sorts of them. I use tracks mink oil with good results. But I haven't been shooting at that low of temparature. I won't to go do some coyote hunting and I would rather use my flintlock over a centre fire rifle. Tandy leather sells the neatsfoot oil so I think I will do some testing.

The traditionalists wouldn't dream of putting petroleum products near their rifles. I don't use them for patch lubes but I have no aversion to using them for the preservation of my rifles. I don't use them for cleaning.... except in my in-line.

I like using Baricade for preservation and have used it for a patch lube.

I have no proof one way or the other but I believe the "old timers" and by that I mean back in the 16, 17, 1800's used whatever was available not necessarily what was best. I would like to think if they had what we have today they would have ditched the lard and bee's wax et al, in a heart beat.

They also shot rocks and nails when lead wasn't available but we don't see "traditional" shooters doing that today. So I say use what works best for you or whatever floats your boat for that day. LOL
