Algonquin Spring Trout Fishing 2013

I finally finished putting together the videos from the spring fishing trip I did with my kids to Ralph Bice Lake in Algonquin last Mother's Day weekend. With the huge swings in the weather, we didn't catch a lot of fish, but the ones we did catch were pretty nice including an 18" and 22" Lake Trout and a couple of good sized Brook Trout.

There were a few flies out on the first day, but by Friday morning we didn't have to worry about them. Here's what it was like on the 2nd day.

I'm already thinking about where we'll go this spring. Possibly up to North Tea Lake, or possibly take the water taxi up Opeongo. Anyway, here's day 3 which was the Saturday. The weather improved a bit and this was the day Scott pulled in his 22" Laker.

Rob, we were on Ralph Bice last spring as well, first week after the opener, we had luck with the specks on Little Trout and if you ever head back to that area ( we won't be ) PM and I can give you the location. also had luck with Lakers on RB, saw away to many people drinking beer out of bottles or cans while there ( and there is a bottle and can ban for the park ) total disregard for the rules, my understanding they did send a ranger in the day we left....and there were charges laid. way to easy access for them, not sure what campsite you stayed at, we had the first one on the left, very good campsite, Rob, if you ever decide to head south off Smoke to Big Porc, Bonnechere area , send me a note, have fished that area for 20 + years.....

Beautiful area, I'm lucky to have a trailer near there and fish and 4 wheel that area almost every weekend in the summer.
I think the blackflys wait until I get there because their seems to be lots when I open the trailer up.

Well if you ever get a chance to fish """Cradle Lake""" just off Bonnechere, it is aqua Blue in color and holds some beautiful lakers, but it is the fact it's so small yet just around 100' deep in the middle, campsite is a peach as well, beautiful huge fire rock for a backdrop for your fire pit, probably 8-9' high.

Thanks for the suggestion of Big Porcupine and Bonnechere. That might be a good area for us. We pack pretty heavy for these spring trips - to make sure we're prepared for the weather like we had last year. My daughter and I were into Ragged for a September long weekend a few years ago and I had intended to head further south on a later trip. At that time of year we were catching bass, although she did pull in a small Laker on our way out through Smoke. Setting up camp on Big Porc and then daytripping into Bonnechere and Little Coon would probably work out well for us.

I know Hogan would be good too, but a lot more portaging than we usually do on these 4 day trips.

Here's the video from the Sunday. Heads up that there was no real fishing on this day, but it wraps up the trip and paddling out in the blizzard made it interesting. I have to give the kids credit for smiling through the whole thing.



Despite the weather last year, when asked if he was going on the fishing trip this year, my youngest son had an immediate "yes". :-)
