Default Best distance for zeroing in rifled slug gun

Although I imagine it would depend a lot of the kind of terrain and situations one hunts but I'm just curious if there's a generally agreed upon distance that makes sense to set your zero for. 70 yards maybe?

Depends. Where i plan to hunt 100 yards is the minimum as I plan to hunt field edges. 2 inches high at 50 for most rifled slug guns is perfect for most.

Depends on brands, but most have details on box or check out their website with regards to their ballistics for each one. Some I've seen at 150 yds. Depends on how flat they fly. I think 70yds for a sabot slug is too close. 70yds for a rifled slug ok. Then you got to try what shoots best out of your barrel. That is another topic in itself since your buddy who has the same gun will get different results with the same ammo as you! You have 10 months to figure it out!

With the new rifled barrels and sabot slugs I would sight in at 100 yards. They are still plenty accurate at that distance. then just try a few shots at 50 to know how much you might want to compensate for close shots. Again like the others said don't bother with a distance you are never going to shoot. If on the fields go for 100, if you are in the bush cut back to 50 or 75.

you will get many different opinions on what is the best distance. Each person has their own preference. Here is an article from Field and Streams.

I do mine at 2 in high at 50 yards. So far I got two 11 point and one 8 point buck with my smooth bore slug gun. All taken under 100 yards and hit where I aim. I hunt in heavy bush. So I could say my 50 yard sight in range is adequate.

There was a good post on Savage 20ga sabot slugs a while back and I'm pretty sure they were zeroing in at a good 150 yds like robster mentioned. Those guns are real accurate and effective, without bruising your shoulder like a 12ga. Something to think about if you are still in the market for a slug gun. They are built like a rifle but chambered for .615". Impressive ballistics.

    Cheers

Thanks for all the replies. And the link. Wanted to tack on another question if I could. Do you guys initially sight in with some of the cheaper Hybrid slugs (Rackmasters for example) that are supposedly suitable for use in rifled barrels, then switch over to the more premium sabots once your getting half decent groups?

wind will greatly effect your bullet at 100 yards... 50 is prime after that it is play the wind.. 10 mph wind will move bullet
