Salmon run in the Saugeen
I realize that it may be a bit early, but I was watching a tv show today where they were fishing above Denny's Dam for salmon, but the trees had not yet begun to change colour. It has been a number of years since I fished that area, but I am curious, when do the salmon start moving up the Saugeen river in enough numbers that it is worth spending some time there. Generally by the third week of September or would that still be too early?
regards
Mark

Salmon can start to move upstream in September, if water levels are high enough. Last year they were at the fish ladder in Owen Sound September 17.

The saugeen commonly sees its first salmon entering the river early to mid august. Not big numbers that early in the year, but they are present nonetheless.

the best bet to finding salmon early (mid-late august) upstream from Dennys is finding some coldwater creeks which flow into the main river. when temps in the main river are still pushing 70 degrees they will always look for cooler water. And unlike Lake Ontario boots, Huron fish will still be bullet chrome 60 km upstream and more then willing to hit anything

Also if you have a canoe or small boat, pontoon boat etc, all the better!
