iPhone GPS app?
So I have Future Shop gift cards from work and was looking to grab something for the hunting pack. I thought a GPS would be nice, but I then realized that I could likely use my iPhone 5S rather than drop $300 on a handheld Garmin. I'm looking for an app with topo maps and the ability to mark my trek through the bush.
This is the one that I found, but I hate buying apps that don't live up to the hype. Any tech savvy hunters have a favourite?

I use sometime the navionics app made for fishing. It as some nice satelite maps and you can mark waypoint and also add a photo to the waypoint, but I use it most just for scouting my proprety that I know well.
But I use most of the time my gps because you always have satelite reception when hunting moose in the north unlike my phone who just get 1-2 bar of signal on the roof of the camp lol

Has too much time on their hands
Batteries don't last long on phones either.. So k wouldn't use it for long trips in the bush.. Reception shouldn't be required as your using GPS..

You don't need reception to get GPS on an iphone. If you take the sim card out, it will still allow you to track where you are going. They have a GPS built into them, although not as accurate as a stand alone unit.

I did the android app, and the first time you lose signal....well you will get a backtracker...then wish for the handheld GPS.. So just buy the handheld...save some money now.

Mine's a 4, not a 5, but the batteries last for days between recharges.

Remember you get what you pay for. GPS are dedicated and thoroughly tested. Phone Apps are wriiten by a programmer and you do the testing for them. That is why there are always patches for bug fixes. I'll stick to my Garmin E-Trek. It haven't let me down yet.

I tried a gps app in the Fall and found it was good to see where you are on a "google earth" looking screen. I like to have waypoints or our stands marked on my screen, which couldn't be done on this app. I also worried about killing the battery too fast. Its back to the garmin for me.
