    Default Grand River

Hello all. I just started to fly fish last summer and just fell in love with it. I have been tying fly's for a little over 20 years off and on. I always found it to be relaxing. Last year my wife talked me into giving the fishing side of it a try and I'm so happy she did. I fish the grand river around Fergus and was wondering if anyone could give me some ideas on what fly's I could tie to try out this year. Last year I only caught two fish but I was more interested in just getting out and enjoying the time on the water practicing my casting and presentation. I use a 8' 4wt rod. Thanks for your time and I look forward to reading any responses.

Good place to start would be Grand River Troutfitters website. They have hatch charts you can reference that are pretty accurate.

Do you prefer to nymph, dry fly or streamer fish? I'd drop into Wilson's Fly Shop in Fergus. They've replaced Troutfitters. Same general location though.

if you've only caught 2 fish it's probably more then just your flies... location and presentation are key...

    Good flies to try,

Hares ear nymph size 14 to 20
    pheasant tail nymph # 14 to 20
    Cadis larva - 14 to 20

Tan caddis dry fly - 14 to 20
March brown and blue winged olive the early part of May...

I've also had good days with "the Usual" and Royal coachman but those fish can get pretty selective as the season progresses..

    Good luck and have fun

You should consider hooking up with the KW FlyFishers - there is a wealth of information and a bunch of great guys willing to help fly anglers and tiers of any level...

Thanks all for the advice this year has been much better. Only been out twice but had a great time day one I got so many I lost count lol. Day two was a bit harder for me as the wind and me are just not friends yet but still managed to get 13. They were all just 8-10" brookies but so much fun.
