As kids, we would kill 3-4" perch and sunfish to feed the gulls. The adults explained that these fish would compete with similar sized bass and pickeral for food. What are the current thoughts on this??

You'll never kill enough to have a noticeable impact.
The dumbarses with the ling are idiots.
And heres another thought - Because ling arent regulated as a game fish, im not even sure if what they did was illegal. It very well could be, but im not sure.

A life is a life, be it a 55" muskie, or a 5" rockbass/perch. Why kill if your not going to eat it?

What makes me sick in this situation is a feeling that those guy(s) rather have a different attitude toward OOS fish too.

Back in the days when we used to get ice on Colpoys Bay every winter and there were splake and whitefish to be caught there would be ling laying all over the ice because nobody wanted them, would see a couple of dozen every outing anywhere from 2 to 10 lbs
Hope for the best, prepare for the worst!
