Default Toying with the Lyman GPH .50

The Lyman Great Plains Hunter has a 1:32 twist designed for sabots. I was using 220 gr PR Dead Centers today @ 100 yds of the bench. This rifle has been zero'd with these bullets 2 inch high at 50 yds.

I really had no idea where it would shoot these bullets at that range so I covered the bull and touched off a shot. My bad as the shot sailed high. It was dead centre but about an inch high off the paper.

Seeing this I dropped my sight picture down and put a bit of white between my front sight and the bull. I then touched off 4 more shots. It was a little windy out there at times and that may have caused the drifting or it was me not keeping a consistent sight picture. Or maybe a lot of me and a little of the wind. Either way they show some promise.

    That's certainly a dead deer/bear/moose!

Have you tried penetration tests with that load?

No I haven't Pete. The bullet is designed for deer sized critters so I'm sure they would be fine. The recommended load for that bullet is 110 gr T7. At 105 gr 2F Goex I'm under that load.

I'm assuming those are 1" squares and a 2" bull.....which makes it a tiny target for open sights at 100 yds. The peep sight helps, but still it's a target that disappears behind the front sight post, so your really shooting centre of mass.

I have an idea for a target paper that I will try this week, that may help with the sighing issue. I need something for my 8 mm as the sight pin will cover a 3'" bull at 100 yds

Your having far to much fun out there HA....and making us all feel like were missing out

Yes they're 1" squares and a 2" bull. Very small at 100 for sure, so I use a 6 o'clock hold but it isn't precise. I'm going to use a 3" bull next time out to see if that helps.

But it is fun none the less!!!

I took the GPH out again today. I changed two things, well actually three things.. One was my target style and the other was my charge. I bumped it up to 110 gr 2F Goex. After my first shot sailed 5 inches high off target, the third thing I changed was my rear sight and screwed it down three full turns.

This larger diamond shape allowed me to cover some black with my front post and still able to see the rest of the black. I think that helped tighten things up a bit as well. Definitely much easier to see.

I had two flyers that were most likely driver error. Over all grouping not too bad for 9 shots. I still have a bit of wiggle room with the charge. I'm not experiencing any hammer blow black yet. It seems to be tightening the higher I go.

You must have read my mind....the diamond shape bull is close to what I have been thinking of doing. Bring the bead up into the pocket for a more consistent POI. Looks like it works.

    That's good grouping for even 50 yds..at 100, that's really good shooting.

My wife is working nights for a few days so I can't do any shooting yet...did get the range cleaned up and some new panels put out today....ready for Wed !!!
