As a kid we'd go to the local dump and watch the things feeding. I still can't get that image and smell from my mind so I have no desire to eat one.

Last year's cubs are usually nowhere near 200 lbs. A 200 pounder is is likely 3 yrs old.

Last sept my yearling boar was 175 and 2 years ago the yearling sow was 155. they are well fed in my are mindya...

Has anyone noticed worms in their bear before? I butchered one a few years ago a 200lb sow (not a dump bear) that had 2 inch white thread like worms in it. They were mostly in the neck area in the connective tissue between muscle groups, a few elsewhere as well. I didnt see any actually in the meat just between the layers.

TM, I believe a 200 lb'er, particularly a female is closer to 5 years old, maybe even 6 years. A dump bear might get that weight in 4 years because they don't have to travel or work for its food.

September bears aren't too fatty. You can also render the fat and keep it in the fridge to use as you would duck or goose fat.

About half of the bear kills I hear about don't end up on the table. In many cases it's shoot on sight, damage or not...

I've seen one sow with some those... she had previously been shot and only had the one eye... but had some of those worms in the intestines... made sure i cooked the meat well..
A bad day fishing is always better than being on the couch!!

Love bear meat, those I do take to a butcher, can't stand to see them without skin
(the bear not the butcher) Always marinate them for at least a day, and cook the meat in a low temperature oven or over a low fire. Should come out tender, moist and delicious.
