There are lots of shallow water locations that are not suitable bass nesting areas but are good early pike waters.
The issue is "targeting" OOS. In this case I think that means that if you catch 2 or 3 bass in a row from the same area and don't move on then you qualify as a puckered penny.
Rugger - it was he that started throwing the ahole word around - with reference to those objecting to him fishing the shallows with spinnerbaits. If he can't take it he shouldn't start it.

if you see people repeatedly throwing to a spot holding OOS bass then call the tips line.........don't come on a forum and run your mouth about guys in bass boats up shallow targeting bass when they could and most often are targeting pike...........
The ones I'm seeing on Mink Lake aren't catching pike.
If you're chucking spinner baits in shallow waters on bass lakes - you should expect to be questioned about it by others. If you're not catching bass - then it's not a problem. But don't do it and expect not to draw any attention - it will. There are a lot of people out there catching OOS bass for fun.
As far as not discussing it on this forum...since when did you get to decide what gets discussed here???

Werner dude, you are taking this quite personally. While I appreciate your passion on this topic I do not appreciate being told that I don't know what I'm doing when I'm tossing a spinnerbait (which btw is my go-to lure all times of year for pike in almost all areas, and that being because it catches me fish) into shallow water where the pike are and coincidentally a few bass too this time of year. If you must know, this entire weekend I caught more pike on my shiny pink spinnerbait than I did bass. You cannot argue that shallow water plus spinnerbait plus shiny bass boat must always equate OOS bass fishing. You cannot make that generalization and then expect anglers like myself not to get insulted by your insinuation. You must put some trust in the anglers out there, we're our own community and must trust that our fellow anglers know the rules and play by them.
That being said, it is inevitable that we will catch bass in the same areas that we are targeting pike and walleye and rock bass and whatever else I saw folks mentioning here. The important thing is that if you do hook into an OOS that you quickly release it. I think that's what this thread is trying to get at in a very roundabout way. So enough with the prickled prides, the insults and the bad language gentleman and try to see the big picture here.
Folks, if you happen to hook into an OOS please be good and gracious anglers and release that fish back as quickly as you possibly can.

I guess I do take it personally - I live on a small lake which has some nice large and smallmouth bass. Every year there are people fishing the shallows where the bass nest...and I know from 10 years of fishing the lake that you won't be catching pike there. Why should most of the fishermen wait for bass season to open while a few guys go out and pull the bass of their nests?
There are lots of places to fish for pike and rockbass that won't lead to very many incidental bass catches. Why not fish there instead until bass season opens.
It's not a case of if you're catching more pike than bass then its okay. If you're catching any bass, you should be moving on.
It's not a case of simply releasing OOS bass you catch, its doing your best to avoid catching them in the first place.
What I do see from the discussion related to OOS bass is that there are lot of people who don't think the laws apply to them w.r.t. avoiding bass before the season opens - which makes the number of people I see out on the lakes catching OOS bass a lot more understandable.

well guess you can accuse me to as i only fish shallows for pike, heck even if you see me fishing shallows with a spinner bait in the middle of summer i am either looking for pike or muskie, dont waste my time on bass much... my local lake i catch more walleye in 5 fow or less then i do bass as well...
so when im tossing a 6 inch bucktail this weekend over shallow rocks, i guess im only fishing bass and muskie? geez maybe im trying to catch aurora trout.

With all due respect..... the law says you can't fish for a species during the closed season .....it does not say you must avoid catching them during the closed season. Quite a difference!!

Werner why don't you become a CO and police your lake. if your not going to do that stop whining and crying. No matter what your lure is or where you are fishing a bass can bite your hook and no one can stop that from happening. If you catch an oos bass release and and continue on fishing.

I fish. If I catch an oos fish, I release it immediately - I don't take pics. If I have a camera rolling as I catch an ood fish, I again release it immediately - on camera or not.
I fish for pike during pike season and catch a bass or several. I fish for bass during bass season and catch a pike or two dozen. ..it happens. Do I change lures or location? Not usually.
Be smart about it all is what this thread is about.
Catch an oos fish, put it back, no need to take pics. Catch it during season then take a hundred pics of it.

Well boys where I fish we have no Bass, and truthfully that is a blessing, they take no time at all to be the dominant fish in a lake.
When I had a few guys, from this board, up fishing, they wanted to go for Pike. So off we go, to the shallows and rock ledges, throwing spinners for them. I am not sure how you fish for early Pike down south, but what you guys are talking about is how we fish for Pike up here.
