Despite the winter we had last year - I think the grouse made it through pretty well (but I'm looking at a small area) - about 400 acres total. Then again, we weren't too hard on them last fall either - not sure if that makes a difference (MNR and RGS seems to think not).
Should be a good fall if we don't run into an extended cold/wet spell.

I was expecting the harsh winter to make a negative impact on the turkey population, but instead I am pleasantly surprised to see the large birds are doing alright. I even got myself a second tag which I hope to fill this week.
With grouse, I am hoping they are going to be fine as well.
Perhaps it is their way of ensuring survival by reproducing more vigorously than the years before. Keep the reports coming from all your areas. I am not exactly in "grouse country" down here, but I just love seeing or hearing about these birds!

Same. And have seen birds in some places down here that I've never seen them before.
"Camo" is perfectly acceptable as a favorite colour.

I have been watching a couple hens nesting for a while now as they are nesting in an area I have to do some cutting. When I checked on the nests thursday all were hatched and gone. Been seeing quite a few others around as well.
How is it one careless cigarette can cause a forest fire, but it takes a whole box of matches to light a campfire?

Was at the camp this weekend and saw a male dance around my truck while I stopped to look. Then a hen the next day. She only had two chicks that I could spot. Big enough they flew up and lit on a low branch.
