Default Gun Show Goodies: Goex Fg

I attended the annual Gun Show in Merrickville on Sunday and picked up a few good deals.

One of the local guys was selling off all his BP 'accessory' stuff and I spent most of my allowance there This Hoppes 12 ga cleaning kit is complete, there is still 3/4 a bottle of Hoppe's 9 in it....all for only $5. So now I have a dedicated cleaning kit for my 12ga BP barrel..love the colour

Picked up a new tin of #11 CGI caps for $5....go figure..I had bought some last week at the gun store for $11 +tax..

Also picked up 3/4 of a can of Goex Fg. I usually use FFg or FFFg so this will be used for some summer target shooting; at $10, you can't go wrong.

Anyone out there use Fg regularity with their ML's. How does the load compare to FFg/FFFg ?

Any advice on what issue (s) might I be looking for ? My .45 Kentucky uses #11 per caps, hopefully it will be enough to ignite it. Should be no problem with the .50 as it uses the 209 primers.

Sounds like you found some great deals. 1F is usually used in shotguns. While it should ignite well enough, it will be a little dirtier than 2F and you will probably find your 45 a bit tougher to load.

I have that exact same cleaning kit Mike. I've had it for years and isn't as complete as that one any more.

    Good score!

Spent a few hrs reading Goggle articles on the topic. Seems the general consensus is that the slower burning Fg is used for the bigger 'musket' type shooting or when using large mass projectiles (cannons etc). So I guess it would be better suited for the .50 patch and ball than for sabot/conical shooting. .

Apparently some guys using Fg find it provides better accuracy at the cost of the higher velocities of the FFFg. Worth testing.

Down side; it apparently is the worst of the BPs for being 'dirty'. More swabbing between shots and more clean up required. Not a big concern for me, I swab after every shot even when using T7.

Anyway, some cheap powder to spend time on the range with....no downside to that, is there ?

Hey mike. I have a buddy who has canons. I know he would probably swap your fg for some ffg. I know he has some because I sold him two lbs. pm me if interested

I'm sure it would foul the barrel quite a bit. I like the fffg in my 45.
