Has too much time on their hands
That seed has been there for years, just look at the Orders in Council that the Liberals pushed through to bear fruit... or thorns if you prefer, when they were in unopposed power.

"At its leadership convention in Montreal in December, Liberal party delegates passed a resolution proposing that "semi-automatic weapons be classified as illegal weapons."

"As if they didn’t already learn lessons from the long gun registry fiasco, some political figures have law abiding gun owners in their sights again -- this time with plans to eliminate the personal use of automatic and semi automatic guns.
That plan is spelled out in black and white in the Liberal Party of Canada’s Resolution #42.

The firearms resolution is sponsored by the Young Liberals of Canada and calls for a reduction in the number of guns in this country. It urges a future Liberal government to adopt Australia's firearms policy, which included a large buy-back program and a ban on semi-automatic firearms and some shotguns.
Liberals get in a majority and you can kiss semi-automatic rifles and shotguns and probably many handguns good bye. Look what they did with the .25 / .32 handguns.... one big change pushed through and you have 60 days to turn in anything Semi and if they following the Australian model all are cut up in 65 days.
