    Default Minimum Bolt Length

I've been searching through the regulations, I thought I saw it in there somewhere, but I'm not finding it - is there a minimum crossbow bolt length for big game hunting? (deer/bear)?

I'm using my uncle's old Barnett Panzer II (150lb recurve); and the bolts that were custom cut for me are 18 inches; but a friend who bow hunts (compound bow) mentioned there is a minimum length. Now, I'm worried I'll have to spend more cash I don't have on longer bolts.

    Anyone got an answer?

As far as I know, there is no minimum bolt length, the regulations are on the head itself I believe, as well as draw weight and length. Has to be at least 2 cutting edges, sharp, unsserated, barbless, steel.

    For Ontario,

Crossbows legal; Minimum 119-pound draw weight and 12-inch draw length for moose and bear, 100-pound draw weight and 12-inch draw length for deer.

The key part in relation to your question is the draw length as this ultimately determines the minimum bolt length when using broad heads. As long as draw length is over 12 inches (as TR said) and the broad head on your bolt clears the front of the rail when the xbow is loaded than you can use any length you want.

Once you get to shooting and grouping you'll find the longer the better for accuracy. The minimum I shot are 20"....my best performers (my hunting arrows) are 22".
