    Default MURS frequency - update deferred for usage in Canada (garmin Astro)

    So I called Garmin if you update the devices it may not work I got probably the most ignorant air head they have working for them on the phone there is nothing they can do for us Canadians so if you bought a Garmin don't get it updated and I am going to check mine when I get home it doesn't have the newest update but this crazy biatch that I talked to probably is tracking down my unit Id and deactivating it as we speak.

    SAB-002-14 – Multi-Use Radio Services in the 150 MHz VHF Band

    Deferral of Multi-Use Radio Services (MURS) in Canada

    http://www.ic.gc.ca/eic/site/smt-gst...g/sf10822.html

    In 2005, Industry Canada held a public consultation to invite comments regarding policy changes to accommodate new services including MURS radio products available in the United States market. Following this consultation, in June 2009, the Department released its decisions in Spectrum Allocation and Utilization Policy Regarding the Use of Certain Frequency Bands Below 1.7 GHz for a Range of Radio Applications – SP 1.7 GHz, ("2009 policy decision").

    Included in this policy document was a decision to introduce MURS devices in the 150 MHz band (i.e. 151.8200 MHz, 151.8800 MHz, 151.9400 MHz, 154.5700 MHz and 154.600 MHz), along with the following transition components:

    i.a five-year transition period was established from the publication date of the June 2009 spectrum policy, after which the distribution and sale of MURS devices would be permitted;

    ii.all affected licensees would receive notification letters following the publication date of the spectrum policy and two years before the end of the transition period;

    iii.affected licensees that wished to move to other frequencies, at their own cost, would be accommodated with new frequencies where possible. The Department would inform licensees of the availability of alternate frequencies, on a case-by-case basis, at the request of the licensee;

    iv.licensees could continue to use these frequencies on a secondary, no protection basis, but might be subject to interference from the operation of MURS devices; and

    v.the Department would establish appropriate technical limits for the MURS devices in a relevant Radio Standard Specification (RSS) and/or a Standard Radio System Plan (SRSP). The provisions of paragraph (iii) and (iv) would also be applied to certain adjacent frequencies, as listed in the relevant SRSP.

    According to the 2009 policy decision, MURS devices would have been permitted to operate in Canada as of June 2014. Also included was a moratorium on any further licensing of these five frequencies for new land mobile radio systems. These frequencies are currently used specifically by commercial/industrial land mobile and public safety licensees.

    Since release of Industry Canada’s 2009 policy decision, uncertainties have been raised regarding potential uptake of MURS devices in Canada, and the relative merits of proceeding with MURS implementation in light of potential negative impacts to incumbent licensees.

    As a result, the Department does not feel that the introduction of MURS devices in Canada is warranted at this time, and has decided to defer the introduction of MURS devices in Canada until a clearer indication of actual need is provided by Canadian MURS advocates and/or stakeholders.

    Manufacturers, importers, retailers, current licensed users, and all other stakeholders are asked to take note of this provision.

    Issued under the authority of the Radiocommunication Act.

    I ran a test this week in Renfrew County.

    Three GPS collars did not interfere with the following radio frequencies.

    Admaston/Bromley fire dispatch 154.13000
    Arnprior Parks & Rec and Fire dispatch 154.34000 154.72500
    Greater Madawaska Fire 154.31000
    McNabb fire and Mcnabb roads 154.87500 and 154.01000
    Mutual Aid Renfrew County 154.01000
    Renfrew fire dispatch 154.665000
    Whitewater Region fire dispatch 154.46000 & 154.57000
    Ontario Fire Marshall Open page - no interference
    Lanark county Mutual Aid & Lanark Tactical ? no interference.

    I suspect Industry Canada has done no testing beyond the confines of a desk on Slater street in Ottawa.

    Frustrated but continuing the task.

    Yeah no interference with our local Strathroy,Melbourne,Mt Brydges fire departments either I had the radio in the same room as the Garmin.
    As someone mentioned before I think what happens is when the collar sends a transmission back it's a quick burst for position update it's a click,click not a steady usage of the channel.
    Definitely not the sky is falling catastrophe as some would have us believe.

    I spent about half an hour on the phone today with my local MP. She was responding to my first letter to Industry Canada. I've bundled up my material, Industry Canada's , statements , etc. Forwarding all to her office, preparing for a road trip.

    I'm waiting on a subsequent response from Industry Canada , the first on was closer to a form letter. I have my third letter in the que. Not giving up.

    I received a copy of a letter that the OFAH has ent on August 19th to Mr. Peter Hill of Industry Canada. The OFAH has strongly suggested the collars should be allowed.

    I had a subsequent meeting with my MP, she is working on our behalf to find out if there is a problem. I'm attending Zone E, (OFAH) meeting today.

    We need more people to get involved.

    Thanks for the update. I hope they see the benifits in the use of these units.

    I would be interested to know if anyone’s Alpha has actually stopped working with updated code on. I am at 3.20 code, the code that states tracking will be disabled in countries that don’t allow Murs, and correct there appears to be no data in the Tracks menu (a feature that I have never used anyway). The compass pointing to my dog, giving distance average speed etc. all works just fine. I found other threads like this on the web yet I have not heard anyone say there Astro or Alpha is not working.

    My Astro 320 is running software version 3.40. I did an update in the winter, can't remember exactly when. It has worked flawlessly.

    Please write Mr. Hill and you MP. We can get Industry Canada's policy changed.

    Sorry to bring this back up and maybe I should have started a new thread, but is the consensus not to update the unit? I have had zero problems with mine yet and believe the software version is 3.40 as well.
