Yes you can hunt with a pellet gun even if it is under 500 fps.

You only need a PAL if the Pellet gun shoots 500 fps or faster.

Therefore a pellet gun shooting less then 500 fps (ex 495) can be used for hunting and a PAL is not needed.

Don't confuse the firearms definition in Provincial regulations with Federal licensing requirements. The FWCA specifically identifies what a firearm is, for the purposes of the hunting regulations. Federal Firearms Act and Criminal Code differ. You don't require a PAL for a pellet gun under. 500 fps, but that same gun is still a firearm where hunting regulations are concerned. And to confuse things even more, a pellet gun that has a muzzle velocity under the 500 fps, is still classed as a "firearm " for Criminal Code firearms offences, such as point firearm, careless use etc.....

If that were the case (and it may be, but I don't believe so) everyone with a crossbow would need a PAL as well as "bows" is listed there. And I haven't heard boo on here from all the X-Bow hunters about it.

It does specify air and pellet pistols under 500 fps. Crossbows, bows are not subject.

If that were the case I'm sure many bow hunters would be in fear of being charged for not having a PAL. When they refer them to a firearm that means they must follow firearm rules. Such as being cased and not shot off the road. an MNR officer don't care if you have a PAL or not. On the other hand a Police officer only cares about the PAL and not hunting permits.

No one has asked him why he plans to hunt with an air rifle. He may have a full H1 and a PAL. In other places they do a lot of hunting with Air Rifles.

hunting with an air rifle can do the trick if you're smart with it. I've been flogged for wanting to go out for rabbits with it, but a well placed shot at the right distance will do the trick. small game with a pellet rifle (shooting 495), means rabbits at a short distance or anything smaller. it often results in passing on racoons, foxes, cotoyes and bigger animals which unfortunately would simply be blinded by a head shot and starve to death without being taken as a successful kill. also, caliber makes a difference here. i wouldn't go .177 on and furry critter.
good luck OP. chances are you can bag a few critters this year. if you get the duck stamp, mourning doves are a great way to use the pellet gun. grouse and pheasant and crows are also good shooting. i've seen and wacked more small game with the .22 air rifle than I have the longbow or crossbow.

You cannot hunt Dove with a pellet gun.

so if I am in the area and can pick you up and give you a ride .were we going to hunt .have you scouted a few spots that hold small game .I can even bring a dog to run some bunnys for us .let me know as I would love to go for a hunt around London I love to see and hunt new areas D

He would have a hard time "scouting" new areas as he stated that he doesn't have a car , that's his problem.

Well, here are some further information, as I didnt mention it before:

I am in Canada as an exchange student, in Fanshawe College here in London. But as I am here afforded by the Brazilian government, I needed to sign a full contract that included "abster-se de portar, intermediar ou consumir armas de fogo" (or, in english: "refrain from possessing, mediating or consuming firearms"). Maybe I could do it and no one would know, but I better follow the rules and not to put my studies in danger hahaha

I also could buy a bow/xbow, but I would not have enought time to practice it for this coming open season, so pellet guns are my only option ('not to hunt' would be another option, but I dont consider this one)

So I dont have a PAL so far because that would be useless (and expensive) to me, and i HOPE they gave me the right outdoors card option (dont remember if the right is H1 or H2), and I cant find out it for now because I have only the temporary one so far (that printed yellow card), and it does not say anything about the type of it

I am pretending now to buy a bike and reach the nearby farms with it, but it will be useless in the deadly Canada's winter.. so in a few months I will have this problem again hahaha if anyone here plans to hunt around London, remember the newbie hunter friends seeking rides! ))
