Its a Winchester Model 70 "Ranger" in .270 Win. I subsequently had some work done to the beech stock.
The pleasantly unusual thing about the gun is the quality of the metal finish. The other ones I've seen from the "Ranger" line (economy versions of Model 70s, 94s & 1300s made from 1985-92) were somewhat rough. The other Model 70 Rangers I've held all had blind mags, plain bolts, somewhat flat bluing and birch stocks. But mine (bought new in '92 when I was a student) came with a hinged floor-plate, jeweled bolt, knurled bolt handle, high-gloss bluing and a Featherweight barrel. The action is as smooth as glass and it was a tack-driver right out of the box. I can only speculate that in the late production years of the Rangers, Winchester might have been putting M70 Featherweights into beech stocks.

Any number of things could have killed this deer, we've really got no indication what it might have been.
Nice rack, NP. I found a similar one a couple years ago.

Yes anything could have (a few years back we found a buck that had only been dead a day or so - only damage we could see was a swollen foot - 8 miles away from the nearest highway) - but most often when a buck dies with his antlers attached, a hunter was involved.

Aaaah the mysteries of nature....
I am amazed that the rack is in such good condition considering that it was in a fairly open area and many animals had a chance to chew and gnaw on the remains.
I am always looking for sheds but have only ever found a few of them over the past 30 years. That is a great find in my books ninepointer and quite befitting as others have also observed here!
