Cold weather patch lube
Ok so I conducted a basic test to see the effects of freezing temperatures on a lubed patch. I applied the lube as you would when loading then placed the patches on a steel trowel in the freezer. Here are the results.
#1-spit patch. Froze solid and stuck to the steel
#2- mink oil. Froze semi solid and peeled of the steel so so.
#3- neatsfoot oil. Did not freeze and was just like when I put it in the freezer.
#4- four parts neatsfoot oil and one part bees wax. Was somewhere between the mink oil and the pure neatsfoot oil. Peeled off the steel no problem without freezing.
So my conclusion is that the meats foot oil or the 4 to1 blend will work great in freezing conditions. Although I have not seen the effects of barrel fouling using either. So tonight when my boys are frozen to my hot seat let's hope my patch isn't frozen to my barrel.

Thanks for doing the experiment...love to test stuff like that.
I picked up some per-lubricated patches for my .45...they are lubricated with this stuff.

Now I'm wary, because it's water based, I hadn't considered they might be a problem shooting them in -15 temps.
Thanks for the heads up !!

Never had a problem but I'm told a frozen patch is one more component in a pipe bomb. Don't want that lol
