what is your idea of a perfect hunting knife ?

I'm not hung up on the aesthetics of a knife, purely utilitarian..it has to stay sharp, easy to handle and sharp. Also like a collapsing knife to carry on my pack.

In that vane, I saw this skinning knife on Amazon this morning and it is along the lines of what I consider a good knife. Small blade and thin enough to get into the nooks and crannies (Bung hole etc).

I like the colour as well, nice to be able to find it laying on the ground when I'm gutting by flashlight,

The reviewers say it's an extremely sharp knife which is paramount and I like the idea you can get spare blades for it.

I may look at this for a stocking stuffer

I usually have my Briwning FDT, and a Buck 110, with me while hunting. There is a small, rapala fillet knife in my hunting pack, and my Swiss Army knife is always in my pocket. There are others I may carry or switch out depending on the situation, such as a Gerber belt hatchet. I think my next knife will be a cold steel bushmaster, then maybe their boar spear ( just like the looks of that one )

Spyderco stretch . She wasn't cheap, she aint pretty but with a perfect grip for my hand and vg10 steel that holds a wicked edge that sharpens up fast it is my favorite by far. The first hunt I took it on I arrowed my best buck while sitting on the ground at 8 yards so it has become sentimental as well.

Full stop, right there. It is not pretty but, IMO, is the one knife that does it all. It is easy to keep wicked sharp too.

I grew up using the victorinox fibrox series ( butcher / commercial ) grade knives. They are economical less than 40$ and come in many designs. Nella and Hookeye make quality equipment as well.

Really all you need is a boning and skinning knife. They are a plastic handle but come in wood if you prefer. Most butchers stick with the plastic though as hey have a better grip and this safer.

Dont get too hung up in grade of steel etc for holding an edge a good 40 dollar victrinox honing steel and sharpening stone or emery belt grinder and you can keep an edge on a blade in seconds.

They also make a dandy 9" flexible fillet knife, best I've ever used anyone who ever uses mine ends up buying one lol

I also use the Victorinox line, great knives for de-boning/butchering, they do hold an edge well. I found the de-boning blade to long for skinning however.

Mike the fibrox skinning knife is excellent, the blade depth is real nice on larger game, once you've used it long enough and it's gotten filed down it is perfect for deer, although I used my fist / thumb more than a blade to skin deer.

I used the Gerber skinning knife....I like the round edge for the tough spots.



No ML Buck this year, so it's now crossbow season
