Nunavut Adventures

I figured it was about time to start a thread. New member to the forum although I am on a couple other forums. I grew up outside New Liskead and stayed for 22yrs, then off to BC for 6yrs and have been in Iqaluit Nunavut for the past 9 months. I'll keep posting update on here as our adventure continues. Most pictures are from the summer and fall as we are just seeing warmer weather after 3 months of -50 to -60. And by warmer weather I mean -20 to -30 haha.

Great pictures,Provider. It's a vast,beautiful land. So,what do you do for a living and how long will you be there......if you don't mind me asking?

My original job that I came up here for fell through just before I got here. I currently work for an airline, the pay sucks but the flight and cargo benefits make it worth it. Very expensive to fly up here from Ottawa. My wife make 3x more than me so she's the bread winner. Currently working on another Plan A and if that falls through I'' be taking a couple college courses this fall.

When we original decided to come up here we said 5-7years. We've been here 9 months and we figure tops 2 more years. What really gets me is the public school system is not very good. I don't want my kids to fall behind. My family and I are still pretty young, I'll be 29 in June, wife is 25 and we have a 6 and 4 yr old daughters. We're already to settle down. Get some land and a small hobby farm. The hard part is choosing where to move next. My wife has always lived in BC. We like BC but it is expensive. Right now we're thinking possibly Ontario, northern BC or the Yukon. We aren't city folks. I grew up in Northern Ontario and enjoyed it. Miss all the small lakes for fishing. Plus we could get some quite a few acres of land plus an additional property for a cottage or cabin for what we would get a small acreage in BC for.

One of the first things you notice up here of course is everyone where fur and for good reason. Plus its nothing to see a guy walking through town with a couple of rifle on his way down to the boat or ski dooing through town with a rifle on his back. How far would you make it anywhere else going through town with an uncased rifle?

My wife and I had considered going far north with our young family for a couple years as well. I knew what it would entail, but i'm not sure the bride truly grasped what a culture and life change it would be.

While i'm a little sad for my own sense of adventure and lost hunting & exploring opportunities... i'm overall glad we didn't do it. It can be a very hard life, and like you're experiencing cost of living + frustrating employment fluctuation + weak family geared infrastructure was enough to scare me off.

I definitely hope things work out for you and you continue to enjoy your time up there.

If you think BC was expensive... I wouldn't really consider moving to ON. Overall it's still a good province to live and work in... but it's trending downward. Costs of living are increasing much higher/faster than they should for a land-of-plenty, and there has been no improvement in the near-record high unemployment rate for 3 years.
